Two SpectrumX Colleagues Receive Google Endowed Professorships
Florida A&M University (FAMU) has named two SpectrumX-affiliated faculty as Google endowed computer science and computer engineering progressors: Shonda Bernadin, Ph.D., an associate professor in the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering; and Hongmei Chi, Ph.D., a professor in the FAMU College of Science & Technology’s (CST) Department of Computer and Information Sciences.
Bernadin and Chi are members of SpectrumX and are key contributors to the Broadband Map US Project. They oversee undergraduates collecting and evaluating cellular data from three carriers.
Bernadin founded the Speech Processing and Data Analysis Lab (SPADAL) at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering, advancing speech production and perception algorithms related to speech and promoting engineering education among underrepresented students.
“It is truly an honor to be selected as a FAMU Google Endowed Professor,” Bernadin said. “This opportunity will help enhance our collaborative research between computer engineering and computer science faculty and students. It will also bring awareness to our exciting student development activities, including research mentoring and technical workshops centered around ethical generative AI.”
Chi was the Center for Cybersecurity Director from 2016 to 2021. She said the Google-endowed professorship will provide the resources and support necessary to conduct groundbreaking research and mentor and inspire the CIS students.
“I am committed to upholding the standards of excellence this professorship represents,” Chi said.
